Lateral Assistant District Attorney - Civil Rights Bureau

The Brooklyn District Attorney's Office is seeking senior experienced level trial attorneys to join the office in the Civil Rights Bureau and Hate Crimes Unit.

 

The Civil Rights Bureau investigates and prosecutes crimes committed by members of law enforcement against civilians. The Hate Crimes Unit within the bureau investigates and prosecutes crimes motivated by a victim’s race, religion, ethnicity, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, or disability.

 

Under the direction of the Bureau Chief, the ideal candidates are expected to perform the following duties:

  • reviewing charge files and recommending the initiation of litigation

  • conducting discovery for litigation in criminal and State Supreme court

  • preparing and presenting motions, responses and oral arguments to the courts

  • preparing pretrial and post-trial briefs and materials

  • conducting all facets of trials in criminal and State Supreme courts

  • providing formal and informal legal advice and memoranda to agency personnel. 

Qualifications

  • All candidates must be admitted to practice law in the State of New York.

  • Candidates must have five to seven year of legal experience following graduation from an accredited law school preferably in a substantive area of the enforcement, related civil rights litigation, or general litigation in federal and/or state courts.

 

 

Preferred Skills

  • Candidates must be able to excel in a fast paced work environment and handle a high volume of cases and investigations.

  • Candidates should have the ability to work independently as well as collaborate with others within, as well as outside of our agency.

  • Candidates should have litigation experience including a record of jury trials and a working knowledge of criminal procedure and rules of evidence.

  • Candidates must have demonstrated strong legal writing and oral advocacy skills.

 

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is required.

Lateral Assistant District Attorney

The Kings County District Attorney’s Office is seeking experienced attorneys to join the Office in both the Trial and Investigation Divisions.

 

Applicants for these positions must be able to handle high volume of work in a fast-paced environment.  In addition, applicants for these positions should have the ability to think and work independently as well as the ability to work in conjunction with other bureaus in the Office as well as with outside agencies.

 

Applicants for the Trial Division should have at least five years of litigation experience and a record of jury trial verdicts. Solid knowledge of criminal procedure, search and seizure law, and evidence is required.

 

Within the Investigations Division, the Violent Criminal Enterprises Bureau seeks seasoned attorneys (at least 5 years of relevant experience) with litigation experience as well as investigative experience. Applicants should have a proven record of conducting long-term, proactive investigations and the ability to work with outside agencies such as the NYPD, the DEA, and the Department of Homeland Security. Wiretap and appellate experience is a plus.

 

The Investigations Division also seeks attorneys with at least five years of experience conducting long-term financial crime or public corruption investigations. Attorneys interested in these positions should have a proven record of managing an investigative team.  Wiretap and appellate experience is a plus.
